Good Morning, Folks-

Here are some NYSCAA News and Updates along with other items that may be of interest.

 NYSCAA News and Updates

Poverty Symposium.  With over 230 registrants and panelists, representing 80+ organizations from all across the State, the NYS Museum’s Theatre was filled last week with energy, ideas, dialogue, and a desire for action last week.  Over 35 attendees were low-income scholarship recipients including 20+ from NYC’s Neighborhood Advisory Boards.  All geographic corners of the State were represented as were CAAs, NPOs, government, foundations, academia, and the general public.  More information and a summary of the days’ discussions will be forthcoming to all NYSCAA members and participants of the Symposium, as well as a plan for action to call for a Statewide Commission on Poverty and a state-level investment in Community Action.    Many thanks to all who helped make this fist NYSCAA event of this type a success and we look forward to expanding the event next year with increased policy maker involvement.

NYSCAA Legislative Education Day.  Thanks to all who participated in the NYSCAA Legislative Education Day on Tuesday, March 13th.  Packet contents will be emailed to the agencies separately and we encourage you to visit your NYS Senator and Assembly Representatives and share this information.  Hard copies can also be provided.  I would be happy to assist in these visits in any way that you might find helpful.

CSBG Advisory Council.  There was a strong turnout for the CSBG Advisory Council meeting last Tuesday as well which demonstrated the strong commitment of the network to the new Secretary of State, Lorraine Cortes-Vasquez, who was in attendance.

NCAF.  Many thanks to those who joined their New York Colleagues for the NCAF conference.  Visits to Senators’ Clinton and Schumer were successful as were the visits to New York’s Congressional Delegation.  Copies of the materials distributed will be emailed separately but please don’t hesitate to call/email me if you would like hard copies sent to you.  We would encourage you to visit your Congressional representative with these materials and I again offer my assistance and attendance at those meetings if you would find that helpful.

NYSCAA/NYSWDA Annual Professional Development Conference and Annual Meeting.  Please make plans to join us June 11-13 in Poughkeepsie, NY at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel for our annual event and awards celebration.  Award applications will be sent shortly.

Community Action in the News.  In recent weeks, NYSCAA has been successful getting Community Action in the Capital District news media including Poverty Symposium pieces in the Albany Times Union, the Troy Record (p. 3) and the Saratogian (front page) and on radio and morning TV news.  Advertisements were also placed in the Legislative Gazette (3/12) and in two weeks of the electronic updates for the New York Nonprofit Press.  In addition, the Times Union printed a letter to the editor re: Bush’s budget plans and NYSCAA was named as a source for an article in the Schenectady Gazette on weatherization in late February.  We have been focusing on the Capital Region during the legislative session but hope to generally Community Action press in other communities throughout the year.  We want to be complementary to your press coverage, not competitive so please keep NYSCAA apprised of local coverage of your CAA and of any way we might be of assistance.

Membership Development Committee.  Reminder that the Membership Development Committee is meeting by conference call on Tuesday, March 27th at 2:00.  Please call 1-866-680-1500 and enter in code 3162050# at the prompt.
