Good Morning,
The following contain news, information and links that may be of interest.
NYSCAA Update
As you may recall, Elizabeth Herrell has left NYSCAA to pursue new interests. During our search process, Christie Price will be our temporary administrative assistant.
Thank you for the many generous offers of assistance that we received in our request for Fund EZ assistance! Rachael Acker will be reaching out to folks.
A reminder that the NYSCAA Board meeting is set for September 18th at noon in Albany. More details to follow.
Congratulations to the Community Action Angels in reaching their goal of 1,000+ backpacks. The rally to stuff the backpacks starts at 10:00 at the William Appleby Elementary School in Cortland.
Over the fall, we will be developing a more formalized e-newsletter that will complement our print newsletter and be sent to a broad audience. Much of the information that we have compiled and begun to include in these Friday updates to ED’s, other board members and CSBG staff will be transferred to that vehicle when it is fully developed, allowing us to be much briefer in these contacts. If you have thoughts on the information we are sharing in this weekly contact, please let us know. We don’t want to overwhelm folks with too much information or send emails of little value, but we want to be able to connect you to what might be helpful to you and your staff. You can email me at dharlow@nyscaaonline.org if you have any thoughts you would like to share. We would also be happy to post members’ events, changes in key staff, and other happenings if folks would find that of interest.

Nonprofit CFOs Interviewed
The rules of nonprofit finance are not the same as those concerning for-profit entities, commented several chief financial officers (CFOs) who crossed over from the business world to nonprofits. The Nonprofit Chief Financial Officer, a new report from Bridgestar, reported that CFOs who went from for-profit to nonprofit organizations had to adjust to restricted cash flows and differing missions, among other things. CFOs in mid-sized nonprofits said they were responsible not only for finances, but also for human resources and information technology. Bridgestar interviewed 17 nonprofit CFOs and conducted a focus group with eight others. http://www.industrymailout.com/Industry/LandingPage.aspx?id=78519&lm=3046735&q=18589411&qz=130766af8026aeaf79edd67308b05185

The Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity at UNC Chapel Hill is pleased to announce that is is co-sponsoring a conference on Oct. 13, 2006, with the UNC Center for Civil Rights, the North Carolina Law Review and the UNC School of Education. This one-day conference, entitled "High Poverty Schooling in America: Lessons in Second-Class Citizenship," will explore not only the best strategies to improve academic achievement, teacher quality and parental satisfaction in high poverty schools, but also will seek to generate more conversation about how educators, scholars and lawyers—as well as parents and communities —can help confront the nation’s growing tolerance for separate and unequal schools. Some of the nation’s best scholars and lawyers will share their latest findings and perspectives on the effects of high poverty schooling on students; the mechanisms of harm in high poverty schools; the limits and possibilities of legal remedies; and the most promising strategies to improving achievement in high poverty schools.
