Many New Yorkers still need the hand up that Community Action Agencies offer. As the state with the 12th highest rate of poverty (14.3%), 2.66 million New Yorkers, including 888,000 children, currently live in poverty (according to the US Census Bureau’s Annual Demographic Survey). With the poverty rate for a family of three at $16,242 and a family of four at just $20,516, the poverty line only tells a portion of the story. More than half of the residents of Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo have incomes below 200% of poverty, while more than 10% of the residents living in Albany, Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo live in extreme poverty with incomes at less than 50% of the federal poverty level.
