  Client Story *
Ms. S was an 18 year old single mother and public assistance recipient when she applied for the CAAs Youth Employment and Training Program. Other barriers to success in her life included: (1) lack of education (high school drop out), (2) unemployed with little experience and poor work history, (3) poor family support system, and (4) low self esteem. According to Ms. S, she came to our Agency because she wanted to better her life and create a positive future for both her and her child. She sought our assistance to increase employability skills, obtaining her General Equivalency Diploma, and accessing occupational training in the healthcare field. Ms. S was enrolled in the Program and began pre-employment skills training, where she learned what employers would expect from her in world of work. Ms. S finished the training and received a regionally recognized credential issued by our local Workforce Investment Board. Ms. S was then referred to a local General Equivalency Diploma study program. She spent approximately five months preparing for the test. She passed and received her General Equivalency Diploma. The Program awarded Ms. S a full tuition scholarship to be used for training at a local vocational education center. She was enrolled in Phlebotomy classes and passed the course to receive a certificate in Phlebotomy. She passed the state exam and became a state licensed Phlebotomist. The program provided Ms. S with a 6-week paid work experience at a reputable community agency. Ms. S successfully completed the work experience and obtained a positive reference from the employer. A Phlebotomist position became available at a local hospital, the program helped Ms. S update her resume, apply for the position and prepare for the interview. She was hired full-time and was offered a high enough wage to move off from public assistance. Ms. S has maintained her employment for an extended period of time and now successfully supports herself as well as her child. According to Ms. S, she has gained a greater sense of self worth through the Program and is confident in a successful future.
